How To Download Google Sync To Blackberry? (KB10000098)

Google Sync BlackBerry Client

Google Sync is a BlackBerry client that downloads contacts and Google Calendar events onto your BlackBerry, and uploads contacts and Calendar events from your BlackBerry (two-way synchronization over the air). Google Sync is seamlessly integrated into BlackBerry's built-in calendar, and Google Sync will synchronize your Address Book with the "My Contacts" group in your Google Contacts.

Using Google Sync for BlackBerry

To use Google Sync, click the Google Sync icon on the home screen of your BlackBerry. Alternatively you can open the calendar application on your BlackBerry and click the thumb wheel once to pop up the menu. You'll find the "Google Sync" entry at the top of the menu.

Get Started with Google Sync for BlackBerry

First, you'll need to download and install Google Sync, complete the following steps:

  1. Point your BlackBerry browser to: http://m.google.com/sync Once the page is open, you'll see a Download Google Sync link.
  2. Click the jog wheel or BlackBerry menu button to open the menu, and select Get link. This will take you to a download page.
  3. Click Download.

Installation will happen automatically upon the completion of the download. After installation, you can find the Google Sync icon on your home screen. To start using Sync:

  1. Click the icon (you'll see a screen with a login form).
  2. Move the cursor to the login section, and type the full email address of your Google Account and your password.
  3. Press Login and Google Sync will sign in to your account. Once you're successfully signed in, please read the information on the Welcome screen carefully. If you wish, you can make changes to the default settings by clicking on the scroll wheel and selecting Options from the menu. Both Calendar and Contacts syncing are enabled by default for new users. (If you're upgrading from the previous Calendar-only version of Google Sync, you'll need to enable Contacts sync.)
  4. Click the Sync Now button at the bottom of the Welcome screen.

The initial synchronization will take some time, depending on the number of events you have in your Google Calendar and the number of contacts in your Gmail Contacts. Please be patient; you can allow the synchronization to take place in the background as you perform other tasks on your BlackBerry device.

Day-to-Day Use

Google Sync is configured to synchronize with the default calendar of your Google Account. You can select other calendars to be downloaded as well, but you can't add events to these calendars from the handheld. Google Sync will also synchronize your Address Book with the "My Contacts" group in your Google Contacts. To manage your Google Contacts, go to your Gmail account and click the Contacts link. The Google Sync menu includes the following screens:

Status
The default screen shows you when the last sync occurred and what was changed. It also allows you to "Sync Now" and provides access to the Options screen.

Options
This screen has two sections: Sync and Calendar When to Sync allows you to choose between Automatic and Manual synchronization. If Automatic is selected, Google Sync will check for changes every two hours or so. If you do not like this, then Manual will sync only when you select the Sync Now option from the menu. You can also decide how you want Google Sync to handle conflicts. Conflicts occur if the same event has been edited both on the server and on your BlackBerry since the last sync. Specify whether you want the server or the handheld device to take precedence in conflicts.

The Sync Period allows you to choose for how many weeks into the future you want Google Sync to sync events. Choose a setting from 4 to 24 weeks.

Finally, you can choose from which calendar(s) you wish to download events.

Username

Enter your Google account or Gmail address into the login field, then fill in your password. If you'd rather sync your Google Apps account to the BlackBerry, use that address and password instead.

Features

Google Sync has a number of features. Below is a non-exhaustive list of highlights:

  • Seamless integration with BlackBerry's built-in calendar, accessible from the calendar menu
  • Synchronization of your Address Book with the "My Contacts" group in your Google Contacts
  • Automatic background synchronization without any complicated settings, as well as manual "Sync Now" option
  • Support for synchronizing multiple Google calendars with the handheld device
  • Secure network transfer using SSL. Your password is not stored on the BlackBerry

Automatic sync

The 'Automatic' setting will update your calendar every two hours, or more often if you edit or add events on your handheld. If you don't want Google Sync to sync automatically in the background, you can change the setting to Manual sync only. You can find all these options by going to Google Sync > Options or Calendar -> Google Sync -> Options menu.

Reset Sync

If your BlackBerry Calendar or Address Book has run into problems, you can clear them and start the syncing process over. From the home screen, open Google Sync > Options > Menu > Reset Sync. Keep in mind that your entire BlackBerry Calendar and/or Address Book will be wiped, if you have Calendar and/or Contacts sync enabled. On the next sync, your Calendar will be repopulated with events from your Google Calendar, and your Address Book will be repopulated with your Gmail Contacts.
